value for the variable R_HOME. If this is not set, it uses the root
of the current installation. This is done via sed-substitution in the
Makefile (.in) and relies on not using -R_HOME_DIR anywhere else in
the R.sh.in script that doesn't want to be expanded in this way
(i.e. as `pwd`).
